Tampa International Airport, Des Moines International Airport, and Charleston International Airport join new TSA Gold+ privatization program

Tampa International Airport, Des Moines International Airport, and Charleston International Airport have joined the TSA Gold+ program to outsource security screening to private contractors. The administration announced the program earlier this year as a way to modernize airport security and reduce the risk of long backups during government shutdowns. Under this new public-private partnership, third-party companies will manage both the security checkpoints and the screening technology, while the Transportation Security Administration maintains federal oversight to ensure standards are met. Supporters of the move, including airport leaders, argue that privatization offers greater flexibility and operational resilience. However, the American Federation of Government Employees has expressed concern, with National President Everett Kelley stating that the shift is a "step backwards" from the system created after the 9/11 attacks. While the administration aims to improve efficiency and save costs, critics warn that private contractors may prioritize profits over security. The TSA remains committed to operational stability, ensuring that current officers have the first right of refusal for new jobs under the private contracts.
