The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expands cyclosporiasis outbreak to 15 states as Michigan reports first two deaths
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expanding the cyclosporiasis outbreak to 15 states, following a surge in cases of the intestinal parasite. The agency reported that the outbreak has sickened an estimated 22,200 people, with over 10,000 laboratory-confirmed cases across 47 states. While the illness is generally not life-threatening, two individuals in Michigan have died from the parasite, which was exacerbated by significant underlying health conditions and dehydration. Health officials have linked the largest multistate outbreak to contaminated iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms in Mexico. This specific cluster has affected nine states, including Michigan and Ohio. However, the CDC is still investigating separate, unlinked clusters in the other 32 states. Experts warn that high-risk populations, such as older adults and children, should take extra precautions. To kill the parasite, food must be heated to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit, as washing alone is insufficient to remove it.
