Kristin Perkowski acknowledged the tragic loss of eight family members, including six children, found dead in a suspicious fire and shooting.
Kristin Perkowski, the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district superintendent, confirmed that eight family members were found dead inside a home in Grand Haven Township on Friday morning. The victims included two adults in their 40s and six children ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office launched a suspicious death investigation after responding to a house fire on the 14900 block of Riverside Trail. While firefighters initially found no fire during the first call between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., they discovered white smoke and eight bodies upon returning at 11:45 a.m. Investigators determined that at least some of the victims suffered gunshot wounds. Authorities are currently considering a murder-suicide as a possible theory, though the cause of death remains unconfirmed pending autopsies. Perkowski stated that the school district is preparing to provide mental health resources and support to the community as the investigation continues.
