The agreement ensures that a coalition of Catholic health providers, including four orders of religious sisters, will not be forced to comply with the law while a federal lawsuit proceeds. This development allows religious facilities to continue serving patients according to their faith without being compelled to participate in what they view as physician-assisted suicide. Bishop John O. Barres stated that the agreement is an important first step toward protecting religious freedom, noting that the state should not force the Church to answer suffering with suicide. While the law is set to take effect on Wednesday, the state voluntarily agreed to this narrow injunction. Separately, a federal judge dismissed a different lawsuit from disability rights advocates who argued the law unfairly singled out people with disabilities for lethal prescriptions.
