Kaja Kallas highlights new EU sanctions targeting Russian long-range drones and satellite systems
The European Union has adopted its 21st package of sanctions against Russia, specifically targeting the manufacturing and supply networks of long-range drones and satellite systems. Kaja Kallas, the EU’s foreign policy chief, stated that the measures aim to pressure Russia into ending its illegal war and stopping the bombardment of Ukrainian civilians. Key designations in this package include over 30 listings for the Garpiya long-range drone and the Rassvet satellite system, which serves as a Russian alternative to Starlink. By mapping out the entire supply chain for the Garpiya drone, the EU seeks to weaken Russia's military capabilities in the long run. However, the package also includes a notable concession to Greece, allowing European shipping companies to continue transporting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to third countries under existing contracts. Critics argue this renewable exemption may create a dangerous precedent, potentially allowing commercial interests to secure loopholes in the broader sanctions regime.
