Adam O’Neal will leave his role as the opinion editor for The Washington Post on August 31. The announcement came as a surprise to many staffers, as O’Neal was hired just last year to lead the section during a major reorientation toward championing free markets and personal liberties. In a memo to his colleagues, Adam O’Neal stated that the opinion section has become more relevant and accessible during his tenure. He noted that editorial pageviews grew by triple-digits year over year, and users spent more time on the site during his first six months. Interim publisher Jeff D’Onofrio thanked O’Neal for his leadership in reimagining the section. While the move follows a period of significant change at the publication, the administration of the opinion section has yet to name a successor. The Post will work to transition leadership to a new editor as more information is released.
