Alexi Giannoulias Officially Launches Campaign for Chicago Mayor
Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias will officially launch his campaign for Chicago mayor this weekend on the city's South Side. Giannoulias enters the race with a campaign war chest of over $20 million and significant name recognition from his tenure as secretary of state. He joins a crowded field of at least 12 candidates vying for the top job in City Hall for the February 2027 election. The field includes a diverse group of business leaders, former officials, and healthcare professionals. Notable candidates include former board chair and CEO of the Chicago Housing Authority, Brewer, and former Chicago alderman Cardenas. Other contenders include businessman Holberg, businessman Kelly, and Illinois comptroller Nee. Interventional cardiologist Nee became a noted whistleblower regarding patient care at Hines VA Hospital. The race also features businessman Stanton, businessman Su, and businessman Wilson. While incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson has not yet formally announced his plans for the 2027 race, petitions are already circulating for his potential second term.
