All 11 people on board a Kenmore Air seaplane were rescued after the aircraft crashed and caught fire off Sucia Island in Washington state on Thursday evening. The plane, which carried 10 passengers and one pilot, departed from Lake Union and was headed to Roche Harbor when it made an emergency landing in North Beach Shallow Bay around 5:15 p.m. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that while everyone was accounted for, one person sustained critical injuries. Other passengers suffered various injuries, including broken bones, head injuries, and lacerations. The aircraft caught fire following the shaky water landing and is currently resting against the rocks. The U.S. Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash, which may have been influenced by nearby lightning. Kenmore Air CEO David Gudgel stated that the company is cooperating with authorities to ensure all passengers and the pilot receive necessary support.
