Amazon filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission to launch a new constellation of 5,105 satellites designed to provide direct-to-device connectivity. The new network will offer voice, messaging, data, and emergency services directly to smartphones and other devices, bypassing traditional cell towers. Amazon plans to begin deploying the new constellation in 2028, following the acquisition of satellite operator Globalstar for approximately $11.6 billion. The network will utilize Globalstar’s spectrum and will complement Amazon's existing Leo platform. The company intends to partner with mobile network operators to provide service to unserved or underserved areas, including remote worksites and disaster response zones. The new constellation will be nearly double the size of Amazon's initial Leo constellation. While Amazon has already launched over 390 satellites into orbit, the company expects to full deployment of the D2D network to begin in 2028.
