Amazon requests FCC approval to launch 5,105 satellites for direct-to-device connectivity
Amazon has submitted an official application to the Federal Communications Commission to launch a constellation of 5,105 low-Earth orbit satellites. This new network will provide direct-to-device connectivity, allowing smartphones and other electronics to connect directly to satellites rather than relying on traditional cell towers. The company aims to target users in underserved areas, supporting emergency operations, and extending connectivity for remote worksites and supply chains. Following the $11.6 billion acquisition of Globalstar, Amazon plans to combine its existing infrastructure with Globalstar's satellites and spectrum. The company expects the Globalstar deal to close in 2027, with the deployment of the direct-to-device network beginning in 2028. Amazon will also collaborate with with Apple to provide satellite features for future iPhone and Apple Watch models. This initiative positions Amazon as a major competitor to SpaceX's Starlink Mobile. While Amazon currently has 390 satellites in orbit, the full first-generation constellation is expected to be completed by July 2029.
