Amish Shah wins Democratic primary for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District to face Republican Jay Feely in the general election.
Amish Shah, an emergency physician, secured the Democratic nomination for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District after winning a contested primary on Wednesday. The victory marks a win for grassroots voters over the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which had endorsed Marlene Galán-Woods. Shah will face Republican Jay Feely in the fall. Feely, a former NFL kicker, received an endorsement from President Trump during his primary run. The two candidates share a professional history, having served together on the New York Jets. While Shah is a moderate, the National Republican Congressional Committee has already begun attacking him as a socialist. Feely, who won his primary with the support of several NFL owners and players, described the Democratic Party as moving too far to the left. The race is significant for the U.S. House as the district has shifted toward the center over the last decade. Although Republicans hold a voter registration advantage, the administration's previous successes in the area suggest a competitive battle for the seat.
