The administration released a study showing that reconstructing Penn Station could increase rush hour service between New Jersey and Midtown by 33%.
The administration announced a preliminary study from the Federal Railroad Administration detailing a plan to reconstruct Penn Station. The report suggests that by extending platforms and adding new stairways and escalators, the station can increase its capacity to 32 trains per hour during the morning rush and 30 per hour in the evening. These improvements aim to reduce the time trains spend deboarding and boarding without expanding the hub's physical footprint. The study also introduces the concept of "through-running," allowing NJ Transit and Long Island Rail Road trains to continue onto each other's territories. While this requires a "super-wide platform" and the removal of two tracks, it is seen as a vital step toward an integrated transit system. President Trump took control of the rebuild from the MTA last year, and the administration has already committed $200 million toward the $8 billion overhaul. Construction is scheduled to begin by the end of 2027 and is expected to be completed by 2034.
