David Hanson, the interim general manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, confirmed that Sunset Boulevard will reopen overnight after a century-old water main rupture caused a significant sinkhole and street closure. The repair process faced delays due to recurring leaks, prompting the agency to shift to a "Plan B" strategy that isolates a section of the pipe and reroutes water through a smaller pipe. While the street will reopen, the current paving is temporary, and crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent repairs. The closure has significantly impacted local commerce, with the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce estimating the economic damage to be in the millions of dollars. Businesses such as Dialog Cafe and Mel’s Drive-In reported notable drops in sales and foot traffic. Additionally, a separate water main break occurred on Santa Monica Boulevard, causing minor flooding and further traffic disruptions in the area.
