Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin gave final approval on Monday to a $1.5 billion settlement regarding a class action copyright lawsuit filed against Anthropic. The payout will distribute $3,000 for each of approximately 500,000 works among the authors and publishers who hold the rights. The settlement follows a ruling by Judge William Alsup, who determined that training AI models on copyrighted text constitutes fair use. However, the court found that Anthropic illegally obtained many of its training materials by downloading them from pirate websites. By settling, Anthropic avoids a potential trial over these piracy damages. While this is considered the largest settlement in U.S. copyright history, it does not establish a binding precedent for the entire industry. Because the case will not reach an appeals court, other companies like Google and Meta continue to face independent lawsuits regarding how they train their own AI platforms on copyrighted works.
