Police Kill Abdul Ballout After He Plowed a Van into a Crowd During Berlin's Pride Festival
Police shot and killed Abdul Ballout, a 21-year-old German citizen with Lebanese roots, following a 24-hour manhunt after he attacked a crowd during Berlin's Pride festival. Ballout allegedly drove a van into a group of celebrants near the Brandenburg Gate, killing one Polish national and injuring at least 29 others before apparently slashing several people with a machete. Authorities identified the incident as an Islamic terror attack, noting that Ballout had known ties to the Islamic State (ISIS). Despite having been convicted of preparing a serious act of violence and publishing ISIS propaganda, Ballout was granted a suspended sentence, leading to questions from officials regarding why he was free to commit the attack. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed a desire to know how the assault could have been prevented, while Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt noted that it would have made sense to keep the suspect in custody. In response to the security concerns raised by the attack, UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed that armed officers will be deployed for the upcoming Brighton and Hove Pride festival to ensure public safety.
