Greg Brockman and Anna Brockman provide a $5.5 million windfall to secure the preservation of Big Bear Lake’s last undeveloped shoreline.
The San Bernardino Mountains Land Trust has secured the necessary funding to purchase 63 acres of forested shoreline on the north side of Big Bear Lake, successfully averting a luxury housing development. The property, known as Moon Camp, was slated to host 50 custom homes and a marina, but the purchase ensures the land remains a permanent habitat for the world-famous bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow. The conservation effort was bolstered by a significant $5.5 million donation from Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, and his wife, Anna Brockman. This windfall allowed the land trust to meet its $10 million goal just before the July 31 deadline. The funding also covers legal fees, taxes, and long-term maintenance for the site. The preservation honors the legacy of the late Sandy Steers, who championed the project before her passing. The land will now be protected in perpetuity, serving as a critical ecological corridor for bald eagles, flying squirrels, and native plants.
