Mark Phillips has launched a comprehensive investigation into the maritime disaster involving the MV Barima, a ferry that capsized off the coast of Guyana over the weekend. The vessel was traveling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when it overturned, leaving dozens of passengers and crew members missing. While 67 people, including 15 children, have been rescued, authorities have recovered only 10 bodies so far. The administration announced that the investigation will focus on cargo loading, safety rule compliance, and the conduct of the crew. Preliminary findings suggest that the ferry was operating within its weight capacity, but the passenger manifest was significantly inaccurate, with at least 35 rescued individuals not officially listed. Furthermore, the captain and another crew member tested positive for marijuana during the voyage. Public Works Minister Juan Edghill noted that the lack of an accurate manifest hampered rescue operations. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Phillips stated that those responsible for negligence or criminal wrongdoing will face the full force of the law.
