Mingma G commits to risky recovery of Nirmal Purja and others from Broad Peak avalanche
Mingma G has committed to personally navigating treacherous, avalanche-prone terrain to recover the remains of Nirmal Purja and two other climbers from Pakistan's Broad Peak. The renowned British-Nepali climber, who became famous for scaling all 14 of the world's highest peaks in record time, was among 10 climbers caught in a massive avalanche on July 30. While search teams have successfully located eight of the ten victims, the bodies of Nirmal Purja, Nima Sherpa, and Wang Zhong remain at an elevation of 5,000m. Due to bad weather and difficult terrain, helicopter long-line operations are currently limited. Mingma G, a close ally of Nirmal Purja, intends to enter the dangerous section to honor the mountain community and his late friend. The expedition also included American mountaineer Mallory Geis, who was killed during her first attempt at an 8,000-meter peak. Rescuers are working to bring the remains home to their families, balancing the inherent risks of the high-altitude environment with the desire to provide a final farewell for the fallen climbers.
