LADWP crews successfully reopened Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood after a week of repairs following a major water main rupture.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has reopened the heavily traveled stretch of Sunset Boulevard between Sherbourne Drive and San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood. The reopening follows a week of repair work after a 36-inch water main rupture sent 17 million gallons of water cascading through the streets, flooding garages and shifting asphalt. Anselmo Collins, the LADWP's chief operating officer, noted that pressure in water delivery lines is highest at night when demand drops, which may have contributed to the break. To ensure reliable service, the department shifted to an alternate plan that isolates the section of the trunk line and reroutes water through an existing 8-inch pipeline. While the street is now open, some businesses remain closed and many residents suffered property damage. The LADWP announced that it will accelerate the full replacement of the trunk line, a project originally scheduled for 2031, to address the infrastructure needs of the area. Crews will return in the coming weeks to complete permanent street paving.
