Independent autopsy leaves cause of death for Nolan Xavier Wells undetermined as investigators probe mysterious Mississippi disappearance

An independent autopsy has failed to determine the exact cause or manner of death for 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells, who vanished during a July 4 boat trip. The teenager was found on the shoreline of Horn Island two days after disappearing with a group of friends. While local officials initially suspected an accidental drowning with no foul play, the family requested a private autopsy because the circumstances of his disappearance were not immediately clear. Forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. noted that the independent report faced limitations, including decomposition and the fact that the state retained some remains for the official autopsy. While a "red discoloration" was found on the back of the head, experts suggest it could be a minor injury or a result of decomposition rather than a sign of a crime.
