Saronic Technologies Inc. awards a $3.2 billion shipyard contract to the Port of Brownsville in Texas.
Saronic Technologies Inc. will construct Port Alpha, a state-of-the-art shipyard, at the Port of Brownsville in Texas. The Austin-based company selected the site over several competitors, including a prominent project in Solano County, California. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with the facility expected to be operational by 2028. The project is designed to support the U.S. Navy's push for maritime dominance, following an executive order issued by President Trump in April 2025. Saronic Technologies Inc. estimates the shipyard will create 10,000 direct jobs and generate $160 billion for Cameron County. To secure the deal, the state provided an $80 million grant, and local commissioners approved a 95% tax abatement for the project. While California Forever expressed frustration over losing the contract due to slow permitting regulations, the Texas project aims to produce ships at a scale and speed not seen since World War II. The shipyard will initially accommodate vessels up to 850 feet in length.
