Luz Cázares Rescinds Sacramento City Unified School District Agreement to Address Budget Deficit
Luz Cázares, a fiscal adviser for the Sacramento County Office of Education, has rescinded a recently approved deal between the Sacramento City Unified School District and the Sacramento City Teachers Association. The agreement, which would have provided nearly $100 million in savings over three years, was a key component of the district's plan to avoid a state takeover. County officials expressed concerns regarding the source of the savings and the long-term implications of extending the union contract through 2030. While district leaders, including Superintendent Cancy McArn, argued that the cash-strapped district needed immediate relief, county superintendent Dave Gordon expressed concern that depleting the special reserve fund would result in lost interest earnings. Sacramento City Unified trustees are now expected to discuss appealing the county's decision at a special board meeting. If the district fails to provide a more viable solution to its $135 million deficit, it may be forced to request an emergency loan from the state Legislature, which would result in the loss of board authority to an outside administrator.
