Mark Carney has deployed more than 5,300 firefighters and nearly 300 aircraft to combat one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history. The prime minister highlighted the use of drones and advanced thermal imaging to detect and mitigate fires caused by extreme heat and drought. While the fires have scorched northwestern Ontario and pushed smoke across a dozen U.S. states, the administration announced that Canada has invested $12 billion in forest sustainability and fire prevention since 2020. The wildfire season has caused significant destruction, with several First Nations reporting lost homes and infrastructure. In response to the smoke, President Trump threatened to add the cost of the polluted air to the tariffs Canada already pays, accusing the country of negligence in forest management.
