Thomas Smith won the Republican primary for Michigan's 8th District with 50% of the vote, despite having suspended his campaign in mid-July. Smith, a retired General Motors engineer, defeated the candidate endorsed by President Trump, Amir Hassan, who secured 33% of the vote. The victory is considered an upset because Smith remained on the ballot after the missing the deadline to withdraw his name. Smith expressed his commitment to the Republican team to advance President Trump's 'America First' agenda. He aims to unseat the Democratic incumbent, Kristen McDonald Rivet, in the upcoming fall election. While Smith did little campaigning, he successfully secured the nomination. The Republican National Committee chair, Joe Gruters, congratulated Smith on his hard-fought victory. Amir Hassan, a navy veteran and former federal law enforcement officer, was the primary choice of the administration's endorsed candidate.
