A 12-year-old boy, Jacob Freytes, was killed by stray gunfire while riding his bike in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon. The boy, who was an innocent bystander, was struck in the shoulder and ran into a nearby bodega for safety before collapsing. He was subsequently pronounced dead at NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln. Police arrested 45-year-old William Ferrer on Sunday morning outside his home. Ferrer is charged with murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. The shooting occurred during a dispute between a group of men near Elliot Place and Walton Avenue. While Jacob Freytes was not involved in the dispute, two adult men were also struck by the gunfire, though both are expected to survive. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed their condolences to the family of Jacob Freytes, the son of retired Detective Sgt. Jesus Freytes. The Sergeants Benevolent Association called on prosecutors to pursue the case to the fullest extent of the law.
