David Comissiong and Sir Hilary Beckles Call on UK for Accountability Regarding Overseas Territories

The Caricom Reparations Commission has called for the United Kingdom to engage in significant discussions regarding its overseas territories, according to reports following a London briefing. Sir Hilary Beckles, chair of the commission, stated that the region has faced historical difficulties, warning that the failure to address these issues could lead to instability. David Comissiong, Barbados’ ambassador to Caricom, reinforced the group's demands for clarity and self-determination for Caribbean nations. The commission launched a manifesto outlining the "moral, ethical and legal case for reparations." Delegates stressed that achieving true self-governance requires addressing historical claims. They addressed the monarch, noting that while constitutional limits exist, the focus remains on advancing conversations about sovereignty. The delegation also met with representatives of the Church of England, urging continued efforts toward reparative programs. These discussions highlight ongoing international efforts to establish frameworks for historical reckoning and future governance in the Caribbean.
