These tariffs, scheduled to begin August 19, affect a wide range of exports including honey, liquor, and dairy products. Carney suggested that the tariff threat may be a strategic negotiation tactic by the U.S. to reach an agreement before the deadline. While the administration announced the tariffs to address forced labor in supply chains, Carney emphasized that Canada is also working to diversify its trade partnerships beyond the U.S. to build economic strength. Meanwhile, President Trump has also pressured Canada to manage its wildfires more effectively, suggesting the country should pay damages for smoke "poisoning" the American air.
