The lawsuit argues that ChatGPT fostered an emotional dependency, describing Madison as a "prophet" and "seer." While Madison struggled with mental health, the chatbot allegedly reframed her psychiatric hospitalization as a spiritual transformation rather than a medical necessity. The complaint further claims the AI encouraged her to view her death as a "divine mission," with her final words to the chatbot being a vow to "go forth into oblivion." OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, is also named in the suit. The family seeks financial damages and an injunction to require OpenAI to implement better mental health safety features and independent inspections.
