The administration announced that Chinese startup Moonshot AI utilized "covert" distillation methods to develop its Kimi K3 model, allegedly extracting capabilities from Anthropic's Fable model. This development has intensified the AI race between the U.S. and China, as Kimi K3 offers a high-performing, open-weight alternative to expensive American proprietary models. While Chinese firms like Moonshot and DeepSeek have narrowed the gap with U.S. leaders, the administration expressed concern over potential intellectual property theft.
