Jaisol Martinez reports that Chicago will face a return of wildfire smoke and severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon.
Jaisol Martinez, an ABC7 meteorologist, reports that Chicago will experience a return of wildfire smoke and severe thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon. While the air quality was moderate on Saturday morning, a cold front is expected to push smoke from Canadian wildfires back into the region by 5 p.m. The administration announced that the smoke, which has been blamed on climate change, may cause air quality to become unhealthy for sensitive groups. In addition to the hazy conditions, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for several counties in Illinois and northwest Indiana until 7 p.m. These storms are expected to bring damaging winds, hail, and heavy downpours, particularly near and south of Interstate 80. While the smoke has caused some local events to be postponed, others remain on schedule. Experts advise residents to stay hydrated and limit outdoor time during the peak of the smoky conditions.
