UN Reports June Was Deadliest Month for Ukrainian Civilians Since April 2022 Amid Intensified Attacks
The United Nations stated that June was the deadliest month for Ukrainian civilians since April 2022, documenting at least 293 civilian deaths. This brings the year-to-date total to nearly 1,400 deaths, marking a significant increase in civilian toll due to Russia's intensified strikes on populated cities. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine noted that these fatalities were largely driven by long-range missiles targeting residential buildings across Ukraine. Experts cited the escalation in these powerful weapons, which are proving deadly in densely populated urban areas. Adding to the alarm, Save the Children’s Country Director in Ukraine, Sonia Khush, stressed that child casualties have reached historic highs. She noted that the conflict has left no safe place for children, citing the devastating effects of powerful missiles destroying entire sections of housing. Historian Yaroslav Hrytsak suggested that ongoing airstrikes from both sides indicate the war is likely to escalate further, warning of continued civilian casualties on both sides. These reports underline the severe, ongoing human cost of the conflict across Ukraine.
