Moonshot AI has released Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-source model that serves as a significant competitor to American systems from Anthropic and OpenAI. The Beijing-based company recently suspended new subscriptions because the model's popularity overwhelmed its current capacity. While Kimi K3 offers a lower price point than Anthropic’s Fable 5, it currently requires more time to complete coding tasks. The release of Kimi K3, alongside Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 model, highlights the intensifying technological race between the U.S. and China. Both Chinese companies are emphasizing an open-source approach, allowing users to download and modify the models, which contrasts with the more proprietary systems often favored by U.S. labs. Although the administration has used export controls to limit China's access to cutting-edge chips, these new models suggest that the American lead in artificial intelligence may be narrower than previously thought. Moonshot AI plans to release the full model weights on July 27th to allow for further independent testing.
