Toshimitsu Motegi and Wang Yi provide conflicting accounts regarding their brief interaction during the ASEAN regional meeting.
Japan’s Toshimitsu Motegi reported that he briefly discussed bilateral relations with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a recent regional meeting in the Philippines. However, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson later contradicted this, stating that no brief exchanges took place on the schedule. The discrepancy highlights the current tension between the two nations, which has deteriorated since November following a comment by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan. China remains firm in its stance against any actions that encourage Taiwan independence. While Japan seeks to rebuild relations, China has shown a little less enthusiasm. The tensions have impacted the economy, including as a decrease in Chinese tourists visiting Japan, and have increased military unease. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has refused to retract her statement that a Taiwan blockade could threaten Japan's survival, though she noted she would avoid specific self-defense scenarios in the future.
