The Hong Kong Observatory issued a warning for heavy showers and a chance of hail as Typhoon Noul intensified and moved toward the city. More than 150 flights were cancelled as the storm was forecast to come within 100 kilometers of the coastal area. The Observatory issued the No 3 typhoon signal at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, noting that the outer bands of intense thundery showers were already edging closer to the city. Officials will assess whether a higher signal is required between 9 p.m. and midnight. Typhoon Noul moved steadily across the northeastern part of the South China Sea, causing local winds to strengthen progressively. In response to the approaching storm, some schools cancelled afternoon classes, and the Housing Authority increased typhoon preparedness at various construction sites. The Observatory noted that the storm's strong winds and rainbands are gradually affecting the coastal areas of Guangdong.
