Moonshot AI has unveiled Kimi K3, a massive new artificial intelligence model that rivals the performance of leading American systems.

Moonshot AI has launched Kimi K3, a new artificial intelligence model featuring 2.8 trillion parameters. The Beijing-based startup says the model closes the performance gap with top American offerings, outperforming several leading systems in coding and general agent benchmarks. While Kimi K3 still trails the most advanced models from OpenAI and Anthropic in overall performance, it ranks first in web interface engineering. The model will be released as an open-source system on 27 July, allowing global developers to download and customize it freely. This move challenges the dominance of proprietary American systems and suggests that Chinese firms are successfully advancing independently despite hardware constraints and U.S. regulatory barriers. The announcement had an immediate impact on the Chinese tech market. Shares for domestic competitors Zhipu and MiniMax tumbled by 27% and 16% respectively in Hong Kong. Analysts note that Kimi K3 raises the capability ceiling for Chinese AI, shifting the burden of proof to other independent labs to demonstrate significant gains.
