John Ratcliffe, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, confirmed that Russian recruits now survive an estimated 20 to 30 minutes after arriving on the front lines in Ukraine. This assessment marks the first time a senior American intelligence official has quantified the high casualty rates facing Moscow. Ratcliffe attributed this rapid turnover to the rise of AI-powered drones, which have become specialized, low-cost killing machines. The casualty ratio has shifted significantly, reaching nearly 8-to-1 in the first half of 2026 as technology has acted as a great equalizer. While Russia remains the superior force, Ukraine’s mastery of drone and asymmetric warfare has successfully stalled the Russian advance. Ratcliffe emphasized that the United States must lead in emerging technologies to maintain its position in the global marketplace.
