Cindy Burbank submits official paperwork to remove her name from the Nebraska U.S. Senate ballot.
Cindy Burbank has officially filed a "declination of candidate nomination" form to be removed from the Nebraska U.S. Senate ballot for the November 3 election. The move by the Democratic nominee could set up a direct matchup between incumbent Republican Senator Pete Ricketts and independent challenger Dan Osborn. Burbank stated that she withdrew because she lacked a clear path to victory, noting that she did not want to waste votes by staying in the race. While she did not officially endorse Osborn, the state Democratic Party has expressed support for the independent candidate to help break the current one-party rule. Secretary of State Bob Evnen will send a letter to the state attorney general on Monday to determine if the office is required to honor the request. The Republican campaign reacted to the news by suggesting that Osborn is essentially the Democrats' nominee. If the request is honored, the race will feature Ricketts, Osborn, and Marijuana NOW candidate Mike Marvin.
