Madison Police Department officers arrested 16 people during a protest to clear an encampment at Williamson and Baldwin streets.
The Madison Police Department arrested and booked 16 people into the Dane County Jail on Tuesday afternoon following a protest to clear a city encampment. Most of the individuals were charged with unlawful assembly and obstructing an officer. Officers were deployed to the area after occupants of the encampment started three fires and threw projectiles at city streets staff, prompting a request for police intervention. One protester was treated by EMS and taken to the hospital, while a second protester was injured but declined medical care. A city employee also suffered a medical event and was transported to the hospital. The Madison Police Department released drone video showing the interaction between officers and the city's Independent Monitor. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway issued a video statement regarding the efforts to reopen the intersection and the response of the rioters. Additional information regarding arrests and a juvenile incident involving a recovered firearm will be released on Wednesday.
