Howard Lutnick Announces $874 Million in Federal Incentives for Semiconductor Companies to Boost U.S. AI Infrastructure
The administration announced the signing of seven letters of intent to provide $874 million in federal incentives under the CHIPS and Science Act. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that these strategic investments will enhance domestic capabilities, create high-paying jobs, and maintain American leadership in the semiconductor industry. The funding will support innovative technologies to increase computer performance, secure domestic supply chains, and strengthen the U.S. compute supply chain. Under the new structure, the administration will receive a minority, non-controlling equity stake in each company as a condition for the funds. This represents a shift from previous years where the government provided grants without taking ownership. The seven companies include GlobalFoundries, Kepler, Multibeam Corporation, Extropic, Thintronics, OBSIDIA Semiconductors, and Aeluma. GlobalFoundries is set to receive the largest award of up to $300 million. These investments are part of a broader government portfolio that includes quantum computing, steel, and nuclear energy, aimed at turning a profit for the U.S. taxpayer while supporting strategic industries.
