Dr. Sujith Ramachandran and Dr. Michael J. DiStefano warn patients about safety risks of compounded weight-loss medications.
The FDA and medical researchers are warning patients to exercise caution when using compounded versions of popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. While these medications offer a more affordable alternative to brand-name options, they do not undergo the same rigorous approval process as FDA-approved drugs. Dr. Sujith Ramachandran of the University of Mississippi noted that compounded drugs may be manufactured incorrectly, leading to patients to inject unknown ingredients into their bodies. Furthermore, Dr. Michael J. DiStefano of the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus conducted a study revealing that many pharmacies are adding extra ingredients, such as B vitamins, to circumvent FDA rules. The study also highlighted that several compounding facilities lacked proper sterile licenses, potentially exposing patients to microorganisms and particles. To ensure safety, researchers recommend that patients consult with a physician and verify the supplier's credentials before beginning treatment.
