Mikie Sherrill identifies software error allowing 6,600 noncitizens to register to vote in New Jersey

Mikie Sherrill, the Governor of New Jersey, revealed that a software error allowed 6,600 noncitizens to register to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. The glitch occurred at the Motor Vehicle Commission when individuals applying for identification cards were registered to vote despite indicating they were not U.S. citizens. While fewer than 400 of these individuals actually cast ballots, the administration announced the case as a primary reason to pass the SAVE America Act. The administration seeks to mandate in-person documentary proof of citizenship for all voters. While the administration suggests the error indicates widespread issues, Mikie Sherrill noted that the mistake did not sway any election outcomes. The Department of Justice is currently investigating the case and requested specific data on the affected voters. However, Mikie Sherrill expressed concern that the administration is weaponizing the Department of Justice for political purposes, noting that the state is constitutionally responsible for its own voter rolls. Experts suggest that while the error is significant, it represents a minuscule fraction of the state's total registered voters.
