Downers Grove officials recover body of contractor who was trapped in storm sewer during construction accident
Downers Grove officials recovered the body of a contractor who was trapped in a storm sewer on Tuesday afternoon. The worker, employed by Houston-based Vortex Lining Systems LLC, was part of a team working on a large-diameter pipe rehabilitation project when intense storms on Monday swept them into the underground system. While one contractor was successfully rescued on Monday and transported to a local hospital in good condition, the second worker remained missing as hazardous water levels and air quality made active rescue efforts dangerous. Emergency responders transitioned the operation to a recovery mission on Monday evening. The contractor was finally located near Washington Street around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The DuPage County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is currently investigating the incident.
