The theft left the Pasadena business with approximately $15,000 in damages, forcing the bakery to operate in 92-degree temperatures during a period of extreme heat. The loss has created significant financial and emotional burdens for the owners. While the bakery remains open, the lack of functional air conditioning has caused cakes to melt and affected the performance of freezers and other appliances. To mitigate the impact, the business has had to rely on portable cooling units and fans. Pasadena officials are urging local business owners to protect their rooftop HVAC units by installing tamper-resistant steel cages and motion-activated security cameras. Police warned that copper theft is not only costly but can also create fire hazards and risks of electrocution if live grounding wires are improperly handled.
