This amount represents roughly 60% of the total $166 billion collected under the "liberation day" tariffs, which were imposed using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. While major corporations like Apple, Amazon, and Nike received significant payouts, the average consumer did not receive a direct refund. Because only importers who directly paid the tariffs can claim the money back, most retail companies are using the funds to offset rising costs or lower prices for shoppers. For example, Amazon chief financial officer Brian Olsavsky stated that the company would proactively refund some customers while using the rest to support lower store prices. Despite the court ruling, President Trump remains committed to the tariff strategy. The administration has already introduced a new round of tariffs on 60 trading partners to address forced labor issues, even as a coalition of 25 states filed a lawsuit to challenge the legality of these new levies.
