Michael Aaland and Costco Wholesale Corporation reach a $14 million settlement over allegedly misleading promotional emails sent to Washington residents.

Costco Wholesale Corporation has agreed to a $14 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit filed by Michael Aaland. The litigation alleges that the warehouse club sent promotional emails between June 2, 2021, and July 7, 2026, featuring subject lines that created a false sense of urgency. Specifically, the lawsuit claims Costco advertised "limited-time" offers, such as "Hot Buys available for 5 Days Only," while the company allegedly knew it would extend those promotions beyond the stated deadlines. Costco denied any wrongdoing and maintained that it complied with all legal requirements, ultimately agreeing to the settlement to avoid the costs and uncertainty of further litigation. Washington residents who received qualifying emails may be eligible for a pro rata share of the $14 million fund. To receive a payout, eligible consumers must submit a valid claim by August 24, 2026. The settlement received preliminary approval in June, with a final hearing scheduled for October 2, 2026.
