Costco's New Mission Viejo Gas Station Undercuts Local Prices, Pressuring Area Retailers
Costco opened its first independent gas station in Mission Viejo, setting a low price point that is expected to challenge local gas retailers. The new facility sells regular gasoline for $4.59 per gallon, which AAA reports is significantly below the Orange County average price. The opening of the station was highlighted by Costco’s emphasis on its fuel business. During earnings calls, Costco President and CEO Ron Vachris and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip both stated that the retailer's fuel operations are strengthening customer loyalty across its broader services. While the station does not house a Costco warehouse, its aggressive pricing poses a direct competitive threat to nearby convenience store operators, including Circle K, BP, and Shell. The timing of the low-cost opening coincides with California increasing its gas tax by 2.2 cents per gallon starting July 1. These factors place increased market pressure on existing local fuel providers as consumers are offered a new, lower-priced option.
