Cuban dissident artist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrives in Miami after serving a five-year prison sentence under the Cuban regime.

Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrived in Miami on Saturday after being released from a five-year prison sentence in Cuba on the condition that he live in exile. The 38-year-old artist and co-founder of the San Isidro Movement was greeted by a cheering crowd at the airport. He was previously imprisoned for public disorder and insulting national symbols following a 2021 protest. The administration announced that the U.S. granted him parole earlier this week, allowing him to escape the Cuban government's repression. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the artist for using his work to demand basic freedoms, noting that his only "crime" was refusing to stay silent. Rubio also urged the Cuban government to release more than 700 other political prisoners. The arrival comes amid heightened diplomatic tension. The administration has implemented an oil blockade and sanctions that have caused fuel shortages and a 60% drop in tourism. While the Cuban government rejected the "political prisoner" label, the U.S. continues to support the pursuit of freedom for the Cuban people.
