Taylor Farms de Mexico Recalls Iceberg Lettuce Due to Cyclospora Parasite Outbreak
Taylor Farms de Mexico voluntarily recalled iceberg lettuce sourced from a specific farm in central Mexico following a cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Food and Drug Administration linked the contamination to lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants and sold under the Marketside brand at Walmart. As of August 4, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed at least 10,468 cases of the intestinal illness, with over 12,000 additional cases reported. The parasite, which causes watery diarrhea and frequent bowel movements, is difficult to remove through standard washing. It can contaminate produce during any stage of the supply chain, from harvesting to transport. To address the concerns, Sysco, a major food distribution company, has stopped purchasing iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico. The recall highlights the U.S. reliance on imports, as Mexico provides approximately 88% of the nation's imported lettuce. Experts note that domestic production in California and Arizona often hits limits, prompting the U.S. to turn to Mexican imports to meet year-round demand.
