Iowa Reports 226 Confirmed Cases of Cyclosporiasis as National Outbreak Spreads Across 45 States
Iowa Health and Human Services has confirmed 226 cases of cyclosporiasis across 48 counties, according to a new weekly report. The microscopic parasite, which causes severe diarrhea and weight loss, has been linked to contaminated produce, specifically iceberg lettuce. While 47 patients in Iowa reported acquiring the infection while traveling internationally, the majority of cases are being investigated at the state and federal levels to determine the national outbreak source. Nationwide, the CDC estimates more than 19,000 cases have been connected to the national outbreak since May 1. A major multistate outbreak involving nine states—including Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana—has been identified as potentially linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell. The FDA and CDC have prompted a voluntary recall of all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico by Taylor Farms. Health officials advise consumers to cook produce to at least 158 degrees Fahrenheit to destroy the parasite, as washing alone may not eliminate the risk.
