Five family members, including fire captain Spencer Long, were killed after a flash flood swept through southern Utah canyons on Friday.

Spencer Long, a captain in the Provo fire department, was among five family members killed by a catastrophic flash flood in southern Utah on Friday. The victims included his wife, Katrina, and their three sons, Reid, Thayne, and Gage. The family was hiking in a scenic red rock canyon near Bicknell when heavy rains triggered a massive debris flow from the Cottonwood Burn Scar. The family arrived at Sunglow Campground for a day excursion, but the sudden flooding swept them away. Deputies first located the body of a young male in the flood wash on Friday evening, followed by two other family members. The remaining two bodies were recovered on Saturday morning. While the five members died in the flood, their daughter, Lydia, survived as she was not on the trip. The Wayne County Sheriff's Office confirmed that multiple agencies assisted in the search. A GoFundMe page established to support Lydia has raised over $184,000 to help her navigate the loss of her parents and siblings.
